The Internet As A Mirror of Society

On Pete Townshend's on-line diary he has posted the following quote made recently by Dr Vint Cerf, who in 1970 helped create the TCP/IP proticol. I think its worth thinking about:

"If you have the ivory tower view that the internet is good only if everything on it is good you are mistaken."

"The internet is a reflection of our society and that mirror is going to be reflecting what we see," he said. "If we do not like what we see in that mirror the problem is not to fix the mirror, we have to fix society."

I've never agreed more. Imagine life without blogging, without e-mail, without the world's information and pictures at your fingertips! I can't imagine what life was like before that. -Zoe

Interesting point, except for the fix part. We learn in recovery we can not fix anybody but ourselves. So if I do not like something in somebody else, I have to adjust my self, not try to adjust the other person, which I can not.

Olympiada- Yes, but what he is talking about is when society at a whole doesn't like what it sees in the mirror then society as a whole should endevour to change itself rather than finding fault in the mirror. And we as individuals can effect society-wide changes if we work together for the common good.
