Two Kinds of People

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
"There are two kinds of people in this world that go around beardless - boys and women, and I am neither one."

- Greek Saying

And then, of course, there are people who need to trim their beard and come their hair.. I am one of them...

I Don't Believe

"I could not say I believe — I know! I have had the experience of being gripped by something that is stronger than myself, something that people call God."

Wiburys Reborn

Great news via Billboard.com (via a good soul at the George Harrison.com forum). After being out of print for over ten years the Traveling Wilburys' two albums are being rereleased by Wilbury Records/Rhino. For those who don't know, the Traveling Wilburys was a "supergroup" made up of George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynn, who all assumed pseudonyms for the project as Wilbury brothers: Nelson, Lucky, Charlie T. Jr, Lefty and Otis Wilbury (and Spike, Boo, Muddy and Clayton Wilbury on their second album).

From what I know this is a project George Harrison was working on when he died in 2001 and which Olivia Harrison and Barbara Orbison had taken up in his stead. The story describes the rerelease:
"Traveling Wilburys Volume 1" and "Traveling Wilburys Volume 3" will be available together in one package with bonus tracks and a DVD of rare footage, as a deluxe linen-bound edition, a vinyl set and a digital bundle. The DVD boasts a 24-minute documentary and five music videos.
I'm very much looking forward to holding that in my greedy little hands!

Rachel Redux

This is a rerecording of a song I did some time ago. Its a reworking of the traditional spiritual "Mary, Don't You Weep" into a Jewish version I call "Rachel, Don't You Weep." For this new version I've changed the song from Dm to Dmaj, since it is traditional played in a major key. This is also my first recording featuring my newly acquired banjulele.

They Don't Make Pope's Like They Used To...

And yes, I know thats not necessarily a bad thing! But the current Pope is definitely not as hip as his predecessor.

From The Sunday Mail (via Expecting Rain):
Last week, the Pope disclosed in a new book that in 1997 he was opposed to Bob Dylan appearing at a youth event with the late Pope John Paul because he considered the pop star the wrong kind of "prophet".

At that concert in central Italy, Dylan sang Knockin' on Heaven's Door, his 1960s anti-war classic A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, and Forever Young.

I suppose the obvious cheap shot would be mentioning that Bob is Jewish and that Pope Benedict XVI is a former member of the Hitler Youth, but I'm not nearly petty enough to bring that up...

Note: If you don't understand the title to this post, don't be alarmed. Its a George Formby in-joke.

My New Toy

As my guru George Harrison often said, you can never have too many ukuleles! I recently picked up this vintage (circa 1940s) "British Made BH&S Melody-Uke" banjo uke down at a little shop in the Village. I've been wanting a banjo uke/banjulele for quite a while & couldn't resist this baby when I saw it. Its a little beat up, but plays like a dream. As one would expect with a banjo head on it the sound is much louder and brasher than a normal ukulele. Its a sound that some uke enthusiasts don't care for, but I think it sounds great (But I've been told I have questionable taste in music ;) )

Sometimes Its The Little Things...

After weeks of searching and finally giving up all hope, I finally found my sunglasses!! They were hiding in a box of miscellaneous crap left over after the move from PA, which I could have sworn I'd looked in already.

How NYC Are You?

Via Erica, who feeds my survey/quiz addiction ;)

You Are 92% NYC

Congratulations, you are truly a New Yorker. You've seen it all, and you're more than a little cynical.

Homecomings

As I continue to make arrangements for my move home almost magical things are taking place in advance of my return. While I was home over the winter break I was able to reconnect with several old friends and spent a good deal of time with one very good friend in particular. As I have mentioned in past posts we got along incredibly well, amost as if we'd never been apart. It is great to still be friends and be the people we are today. And yet, as great as that visit was... there were times when we both felt as if a part of us was missing... you see, once upon a time we were a trio (sometimes joined by a fourth) and we could palpably feel the void left by our missing friend. As good as thing were, we were not complete without her.

Happily this friend has returned to us. After many years apart we find ourselves drawn back together. We're not the same as we once were (if we were we'd likely be dead now), but two things will always remain: our friendship and our love for one another.

And in a few short months we can all sit together again, share a drink, share some memories of the "old days" and make new memories to be remembered at a later date.

Welcome home, Teresa!

Ralph on the "Jesus Tomb"

I've hesitated to even comment on the whole "Jesus Tomb" thing that James Cameron has stirred up, but Ed Cook over at Ralph the Sacred River has a few meaningful comments on some linguistic aspects of the find, as well as providing some links to other takes on the situation.

What's Your Secret?

This one is for Misti ;)

"People often write me and ask how I keep my wood floors so clean when I live with a child and a dog, and my answer is that I use a technique called Suffering From a Mental Illness."

Life (Now with English Subtitles!)

"Vitaque mancipio nulli datur, omnibus usu."

- Titus Lucretius Carus (c 99-55 BCE), De Rerum Natura
Updated: Since I apparently misjudged the classical education of my readership, here is a translation of the above quote:
"Life is given no nobody, it is loaned to everyone"
-Titus Lucretius Carus, On the Nature of Things

The background image on this page is a Hebrew translation of the verse from Bob Dylan's song  It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), from which the title of this blog is taken. Translation courtesy of Yoram Aharon of Hod-HaSharon's page--found via YudelLine-- which has many Dylan lyrics in Hebrew.
