Its Virtually the End of the World as We Know It...

And another strange story via JewSchool. This rates as one of the stranger things I've seen in a long time:

Yitzhaq Hayutman holds the key to peace on Earth - it's on a floppy disk in his pants pocket.

[...]
Virtual 3rd Temple
He has two big ideas, two ways to engineer the apocalypse. The first: a hovering holographic temple. Hayutman wants to set up an array of high-powered, water-cooled lasers and fire them into a transparent cube suspended beneath a blimp. The ephemeral, flickering image, he says, would fulfill an ancient, widely revered Jewish prophecy that the temple will descend from the heavens as a manifestation of light. Hayutman hopes to finance the project with some of the proceeds from a $20 million patent-infringement suit he and his partners have filed against Palm.

The rest of that money would be poured into Hayutman's second idea for jump-starting the end-times: a virtual temple within a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. The goal is for thousands of people to join in its construction on the Web. Hayutman even wants to display progress reports in the floating hologram as a kind of apocalyptic scoreboard.

A very merry un-baptism to you!

Responsing to the Church of Latter Day Saint's (aka Mormon's) posthumous baptizing of deceased Jews--including victims of the Shoah--), the International Jewish Conspiracy unveiled a campaign this week to de-baptize the Mormons.
The Church of Latter-day Saints, a religious sect founded by a man who claimed to learn the word of God by putting his face in a hat, has been baptizing the dead, including up to several hundred thousand Jews. The International Jewish Conspiracy is fighting back with a sweeping program of de-baptism that will forceably "choose" Mormons and other Christian fundamentalists for inclusion in G-d's favorite tribe.

Jews to have been baptized include Menachem Begin, a former prime minister of Israel, diarist Anne Frank, and the Baal Shem Tov, the spiritual leader whose teachings form the basis for the Hasidic movement.

Non-Jews to have been baptized include Adolf Hitler, formerly a Roman Catholic...

Mormons baptize the dead using a practice known as proxy baptism, which allows a living person to stand in for the deceased," explains Yosef Shmidt, counter-Mormon intelligence specialist. "The process is slow, and requires a ceremony that includes complete immersion of the proxy in water. 'De-bapping' is done on a specially consecrated Macintosh G-4 computer, known as the Mac A/B. It's faster, and since you use fewer towels, better for the environment.'
The process submits the subject to a virtual bris, six years of Hebrew lessons zipped into 8.3 seconds, several heavy meals and a bar- or bat-mitzvah at which virtual relatives talk about the subject's acne. "All told, it takes 14.2 seconds per goy, and we think we can improve on that with firewire."

The Church of Latter-day Saints makes no effort to inform the family members of those baptised by proxy; the only way to know if your relatives have been baptised in death is to look for their names on the Mormon's on-line International Geneological Index. To request the removal of a family member from their records, follow these instructions.

Sell Your Chometz Online

Since it is prohibited to possess chametz on Pesach, any chametz left undisposed must be sold to a non-Jew. [Any chametz remaining in the possession of a Jew during Pesach may not be used, eaten, bought or sold even after Pesach.]

Therefore, all chametz that will not be eaten or burned before Pesach and all chametz utensils that will not be thoroughly cleaned by then should be stored away.

The storage area should be locked or taped shut to be leased to the non-Jew at the time of the chametz sale.

Since there are many legal intricacies in this sale, only a competent rabbi should be entrusted with its execution. The rabbi acts as our agent both to sell the chametz to the non-Jew on the morning before Pesach starts and also to buy it back the evening after Pesach ends.

And by visiting http://www.chabad.org you can sell your chometz on-line. More info at the following link:

The 2nd Coming of Brian

Coming back soon to a theater near you -- a controversial film about a Jewish guy from Nazareth who is worshiped as the Messiah and crucified by the Romans.

No, it's not Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ." It's Monty Python's 'Life of Brian'!

I don't want your blood money...

Thanks to The Yada Blog for pointing out this article, which consists of a recent interview Stephen Spielberg gave to Katie Couric promoting the DVD release of Schindler's List. Among other things they discussed the creation of Spielberg's Shoah Foundation:

Couric: “Shoah means?”

Spielberg: “Catastrophe, annihilation, death by fire, you know? Shoah is another word for Holocaust which is another word for the end of the world by fire, by flame.”

Couric: “I know that you've funded a lot of this effort with the proceeds you made from ‘Schindler's List.’ Did you feel a moral obligation to do that? I mean that you said in a way, ‘I don't want to call it blood money, but…"

Spielberg: “It is blood money. Let’s call it what it is. I didn't take a single dollar from the profits I received from ‘Schindler's List’ because I did consider it blood money. When I first decided to make ‘Schindler's List" I said, if this movie makes any profit, it can't go to me or my family, it has to go out into the world and that's what we try to do here at the Shoah Foundation. We try to teach the facts of the past to prevent another Holocaust in the future.”

The Shoah Foundation, now funded by donations from individuals around the world, collected testimonies from 52,000 survivors -- their memories of their lives before, during and after those darkest times.

Spielberg: “It took about eight years to collect their testimonies from almost 64 countries in 32 languages... I hope they'll be used in schools, in libraries and in Holocaust museums and other museums, repositories all over the world. I hope it'll be used to educate young people as to the ultimate dangers of how far hate can take us… this is a living example and there are still witnesses that are alive that survived it.”

By and large the Holocaust survivors that I know, who I’ve met over the years, don't have that sense of rage and they don't have a sense of revenge. They’re not seeking revenge or a kind of justice, they’re happy to be alive, they’re happy to have given birth to new generations and they just consider their survival a miracle. Some are wracked with guilt that they did in fact survive, others who in their opinion, more worthy of survival, did not. But they've found a way to live their lives and in a sense, survivors who are still alive today and the survivors who are not but who gave their testimony to the Shoah Foundation, each of those survivors became teachers and so in that sense they'll live forever.”

Proof that those survivors, and the Shoah Foundation, are reaching a new generation comes from young people like Nicole Barnes. She and several other high school students worked with the Shoah Foundation to make a video called "Giving Voice" which weaves together first person accounts from Holocaust survivors with a teenage perspective on intolerance and bigotry. "Giving Voice" will be sent to schools across the country to inspire dialogue on these issues.

Spielberg: “I guess the greatest cliché we've ever heard, but the most important words spoken, is, love, you know, love your neighbor and, as you would yourself. It’s a biblical term, it’s important, and it’s embraced by every religion and yet it seems to be a far cry from what we're experiencing today.”

Couric: “Mel Gibson's dad was quoted as saying something that I think many people found quite disturbing. He said, ‘the Germans didn't have enough gas to cremate 6 million people’ and ‘those concentration camps were just work camps,’ completing his thought with, ‘it’s maybe not all fiction, but most of it is,’ referring to the Holocaust. When you read a quote like that or hear about it, it doesn't make you angry when people say things like that?”

Spielberg: “You know it makes me sad, not angry. It makes me sad at people who deny the Holocaust. I’ve learned there are a lot of people that don't want to believe the Holocaust ever happened because it doesn't fit their other beliefs and so they deny it and it makes them sleep better at night to do so. But it makes the Holocaust survivors sleep better at night to know that we've given them a voice. We’ve given 52,000 voices to go off into the world and teach young children the truth about what happened 60 years ago and how to prevent it from happening 60 years from now.”

Couric: “When you look back on your career, and you certainly have a lot of great work ahead of you, I know, but do you hope that people will identify you first and foremost with something like ‘Schindler's List’ and with your work with the Shoah Foundation?”

Spielberg: “Well I think the Shoah Foundation and certainly ‘Schindler's List’ certainly represents more of who I am than what I want to become. Sometimes I’ll hide behind my fantasy films. You know, it’s safer to do that and often it’s more fun to do that. It’s a lot more fun making ‘E.T.’ than it was ‘Schindler's List.’ It was a lot more fun making ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ than it was ‘Saving Private Ryan.” But who I am is more what I did with ‘Schindler's List’ and now with the Shoah Foundation and I’d like people to remember me the way I know myself. We have a thing, we say in Hebrew, tikkun olam which means, the world always needs fixing and we as Jews, we as all people, have a responsibility to help fix things when they're broken and I think ‘Schindler's List’ and the Shoah Foundation does exactly that.”

Jewish Google-Bomb

Mobius over at :: jewschool :: has brought to my attention the latest 'Google-Bomb' incident--the most famous, and my personal favorite, being the "miserable failure" bomb. For those that don't know a "Google-bomb" is "A technique through which a group of bloggers working together can make a webpage come up when someone searches Google for certain keywords."

In this instance it appears that if you Google the word "Jew" the top result is a disgusting antisemitic hate site. This was discovered by a writer at j. magazine, who brought it to the attention of Google, who doesn't seem to give a crap.

mobius has an inventive pro-active solution:
I'd like to propose a j-blogger Google bombing campaign, to push Jew
Watch, as well as the other questionable high-ranking sites which
appear in the search results for "Jew" (such as a Jews for Jesus
ministry and Henry Ford's antisemitic tractate The International Jew), down in their Google rankings, replacing them with sites that, well... Jews can feel a bit more comfortable with.

I'm going to suggest using Wikipedia's entry for Jew
as the initial (and official) link for this campaign, as it's the most
inclusive, non-denominational, and democratic source on the subject.
However, if you'd like to recommend additional links, please make sure
to spread 'em around, so that we can get the critical mass going that's
necessary to pull this off.

Wanna participate? Just drop Jew
into your next blog post, or put it anywhere on your website. Be sure
to spread this around to your mailing lists and your friends on IM too,
so that we may actively engage in defining ourselves, as opposed to
allowing others (with vicious intentions) to do so for us.

Man treated after attempting to nail himself to cross

Ok, this rates as one of the most bizarre suicide attempts ever...

Man treated after attempting to nail himself to cross:

A Hartland man was treated at a Pittsfield hospital after he nailed himself to a cross. The 23-year-old man apparently was trying to commit suicide Thursday evening in his living room, the Bangor Daily News reported...

Police said the man appeared delusional and told them he had been "seeing pictures of God on the computer." He told them he had not seen the hit movie "The Passion of the Christ," which depicts the Crucifixion of Jesus....

the man took two pieces of wood, nailed them together in the form of a cross and placed them on the floor. He attached a suicide sign to the wood and then proceeded to nail one of his hands to the makeshift cross using a 14-penny nail and a hammer.

"When he realized that he was unable to nail his other hand to the board, he called 911," Boucher said.

It was unclear whether the man was seeking assistance for his injury or help in nailing down his other hand.

New Bush ad violates military regs

I personally feel that this post from Blah3.com is important enought to repost in full:

"New Bush ad violates military regs"

My friend Picosecond at BartCop Forum notes that the 'Forward' ad commits a military no-no.

The latest Bush-Cheney TV ad "Forward"features several military personnel performing duties while wearing their official uniforms. There are several shots of soldiers carrying rifles, a shot of seaman launching a plane from a flight deck, a shot of a soldier flying a helicopter, etc.

It's a blatant violation of military regulations for any military personnel to promote any sort of political message while wearing an official US uniform. And as Commander-in-chief, it's a violation of military regulations for President Bush to direct or cause any member of the military to violate
those regulations.

The specific Army rule that covers this issue can be found on page 8 of Chapter 1 in Army Regulation 670-1, Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia:

Army Regulation 6701
110. When the wear of the Army uniform is required or prohibited

[...]

j. Wearing Army uniforms is prohibited in the following situations:
(1) In connection with the furtherance of any political or commercial interests, or when engaged in off-duty civilian employment.

The specific Air Force rule that covers this issue can be found in
Table 1.3 on page 8 of Chapter 1 in AIR FORCE INSTRUCTION 36-2903,
DRESS AND PERSONAL APPEARANCE OF AIR FORCE PERSONNEL:

Table 1.3. Wearing the Uniform.
Members ... Do not wear ... When...furthering political activities, private employment,or commercial interests.

That ad should be pulled, or the military members appearing in them should be disciplined. And given the choice, don't you have the feeling that Bush would keep running the ads and throw the grunts to the wolves?

Me And Mr Johnson

On 22 March Eric Clapton will release his new CD entitled "Me and Mr Johnson." This album is a tribute to blues legend Robert Johnson and marks the first time Clapton has devoted an entire album to his musical hero. Clapton's studio work over the last few years has been spotty at best, but his blues albums (From the Cradle and Riding with the King) have been phenomenal, which leads me to believe this will be a great album. Check out the official website below and take a listen to the streaming versions of the tracks available therein.

Judaism: Race, Religion, or Ethnicity?

Recently, while discussing Jew-Hatred (aka "anti-semitism"), a few of us over at the Off Topic Area of the Johnny Cash.com Forums found ourselves discussing wether Jewishness was "racial," "ethnic," or merely "religious." While looking for different views on this topic I ran across this wonderful essay over at http://www.beingjewish.com:

GOP congressman claims a vote against Bush is a vote for Hitler

This one comes courtesy of the :: jewschool ::Blog:

"Republican Congressman Tom Cole reportedly claimed (PDF) that a vote against the re-election of President Bush is like supporting Adolph Hitler during World War Two.

'If George Bush loses the election, Osama bin Laden wins the election,' Cole is quoted in this week's edition of the Yukon Review which covered the recent meeting of the Canadinan County Republicans where Cole was a speaker. The newspaper says Cole claims if Bush loses his re-election bid, the enemies of the U-S will interpret it as a victory for bin Laden.

Later, he did try to backpedal, but weakly."

Bush Might Be Questioned Longer by 9/11 Commission

Bush Might Be Questioned Longer by 9/11 Commission

The White House said on Tuesday it was possible President Bush could be questioned longer than the hour he agreed to by a commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, an apparent concession that came after criticism from Democrat John Kerry.

White House spokesman Scott McClellan, asked several times if Bush would stick to his insistence the session before the commission be restricted to one hour, said it was scheduled for an hour but that "the president of course is going to answer all the questions they want to raise."

"Nobody's watching the clock," he said.

The shift in position came a day after the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Sen. Kerry of Massachusetts, attacked Bush on the issue at a time when the president was visiting a rodeo in Houston. He had criticized Bush for agreeing to spend only an hour with the commission.

"It's good to see that the president has finally found time in his schedule to spend more than an hour with the 9/11 commission to investigate the greatest intelligence failure in our nation's history. I think all Americans hope that his cooperation with the commission will lead to real answers instead of more stonewalling," Kerry said in a statement issued by his campaign...

Republicans fear the commission's findings could be politicized at the height of the presidential campaign if it were to show there was evidence the Bush administration failed to act on any tips that the attacks were being planned.

"I certainly hope that people don't politicize it. This is too important to become politicized," McClellan said.

Politicize it?! If the 9/11 attacks were the result of the Bush administration's failure to act on intelligence then this absolutely needs to be brought to the attention of the voters. A intelligence failure of that magnitude should result in Bush's impeachment, but I'll settle for just getting him the hell out of the White House.

Of course, I would be remiss if I didn't point out that had this occurred while Clinton was still in office they'd have had hos head on a pike 3 years ago.

Yes, More on Mel's Movie

I had promised myself I was done posting about Mel Gibson's 'The Passion
of the Christ,' but I ran across some good resources in my net travels
that I thought were worth sharing.

The Society for Biblical Literature's Website
currently has a few good articles about 'The Passion,' Jesus movies in
general and Hollywood's relationship with Religious films.

  • Biblical Scholarship and the Passion Surrounding The Passion of the Christ by Frances Flannery-Dailey "What is really at issue is not the historicity of Gibson's depiction, but the theological verity some consider it to possess."

  • Biblical Allusions, Biblical Illusions: Hollywood Blockbuster and Scripture by Nicola Denzey "Despite
the claim of the majority of Americans that religion (by which most
mean Christianity) is important, despite their claims to attend church
services regularly, knowledge of the Bible is often confined to
sound-bytes or pseudo-scripture. In this environment, Gibson must see
The Passion of the Christ as vitally corrective."

  • Filming Jesus: Between Authority and Heresy by Paul V. M. Flesher and Robert Torry "Jesus
films are about the meaning of Jesus, not about the reality of Jesus.
While the depiction of Scripture, as well as the appeal to history,
tradition, and theology, help authorize the scenes added into the film,
it is the additions that impose their meaning upon Scripture and not
    vice-versa."

  • History, Hollywood, and the Bible: Some Thoughts on Gibson's Passion by Paula Fredriksen "For
better and (probably) for worse, Christianity in America is mediated as
much through popular media as through the traditions and institutions
    of our various churches."

  • Judas the Film: Storytellers Then and Now by John Dart "Starkly
different from Gibson's experiment with Aramaic and Latin dialogue,
Judas has Jesus conversing in contemporary English."

  • The Problem of the Cinematic Jesus by W. Barnes Tatum "In
academic circles and within the SBL itself, there has been a surge of
interest in cinema generally and in the Jesus-genre specifically. Not
only are commercially produced Jesus-films used in classroom settings
but entire semester courses are dedicated to them."

  • Teaching Film and the Bible by Melody Knowles and Allison Whitney "If
biblical movies are 'common memories,' then leaving them unexamined
means that their power can overwhelm and even replace the text itself."

  • They also have a listing of Websites Focus on The Passion of the Christ

The Boston College Center for Jewish-Christian Relations
has an excellent study guide called Resources on the Mel Gibson movie, The Passion of the Christ

Ok, I'm done. I promise to shut up about Mel for a while!

Tzitzit.net - Online Tzitzit Anthology. Buy Tzitzith online

Learn about the Mitzvah of Tzitzit, read excerpts from the late Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan's writings on tzitzit and order tzitzit on-line at:

the Torah says, "You shall make tassels (Gedilim) on the four corners of your garments…" From this we learn that Tzitzit are only required on a four-cornered garment. In ancient times, many garments were four-cornered. Clothing was not tailored as it is today, but most often consisted of a simple rectangle of cloth, direct from the loom, which was worn as a shawl, cape, tunic or toga. As late as the classical Greek period, the standard garments consisted of chiton and himation, which were essentially rectangles of cloth, draped and fastened around the body. Similar garments were worn in Talmudic times. Since everyone wore four-cornered clothing, they fulfilled the commandment of Tzitzith merely by placing them on their regular garb.

Because we no longer regularly wear four-cornered clothing, we wear a special garment in order to fulfill this most important commandment. One of the most important Jewish commentators, Rabbi Yitzchak Abarbanel, stated that this is the reason why the Torah states that we must "make Tzitzith… for all generations." Even though a time would come when four-cornered garments would not normally be worn, we must continue to wear a special garment in order to fulfill the commandment of Tzitzit.

The Tallith Katan is also one of the least expensive ritual objects that you can purchase. Its cost is negligible, and yet, its spiritual benefits can be priceless.

The 'Passion' Gap

This article on BeliefNet attepts to explain to both Jews and Christians how they are misunderstanding each other's view of "The PAssion of the Christ"

The Passion has already exposed some deep, closeted misunderstandings between some Christians and Jews. Whether the movie will become a positive or negative force will depend largely on whether we keep talking past each other or attempt to actually see the film through the eyes of the other.

The 'Passion' Gap: How Christians and Jews misunderstand each other. by Steven Waldman

The background image on this page is a Hebrew translation of the verse from Bob Dylan's song It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), from which the title of this blog is taken. Translation courtesy of Yoram Aharon of Hod-HaSharon's page--found via YudelLine-- which has many Dylan lyrics in Hebrew.
